Silicone Hydrophobic Powder

01 Overview

A white powder composed of silica-based particles that repels water (hydrophobic) in mortar and forms a waterproof protective barrier on the mortar surface.

Silicone hydrophobic powder is a popular addive used in dry mortar formulations to enhance water repellency and durability of the finished mortar. It is particularly effective in improving the resistance of mortars against water penetration, which can be beneficial for exterior wall finishes, facades, and other construction applications where moisture resistance is important. Waterproof cement-based building materials for added durability with less maintenance

Features of Silicone Hydrophobic Powder for Dry Mortar:

  • Water Repellency: Creates a hydrophobic (water-repelling) barrier on the surface of the mortar.
  • Enhanced Durability: Helps prevent water ingress, reducing the risk of cracking, efflorescence, and other water-related damages.
  • Easy to Mix: Usually supplied as a fine powder that can be easily mixed with dry mortar components.
  • Good Compatibility: Suitable for use with various types of dry mortar, including cement-based, plaster, and wall render mortars.
  • Improves Longevity: Extends the lifespan of mortar in harsh weather conditions.

Recommended Application:

Grout&Joint filler

Waterproof mortar

Decorative mortar

External wall insulation system mortar

Method of Use:

Package into finished products after mixing with other dry powder components evenly, and use it after mixing with the recommended amount of water on site.

The recommended dosage is 0.2%-0.4% by weight of dry powder, which will hardly affect the compressive strength of the material.

02 Mechanism of Action

Water repellents penetrate deep into the capillary pore network of mortar, significantly reducing the material’s capillary water absorption rate and preventing liquid water from being drawn into the substrate via capillary action. Simultaneously, high-quality silicone powder water repellents achieve highly effective water repellency without interfering with the cement hydration process or compromising the mechanical structure of the mortar, ensuring the substrate’s original strength remains unaffected. For instance, WS-90 requires only a minimal addition of 0.1%-0.5% to provide lifelong hydrophobic protection for specialized materials like waterproof mortar, grout, and decorative mortar, making it particularly suitable for high-humidity environments such as bathrooms. This protection offers chemical stability, enduring long-term resistance against water penetration, salt corrosion, and freeze-thaw cycle damage. Ultimately, it endows building structures with lasting waterproof safety and durability in harsh environments.
