01 Overview

SildeyCel ME/MP is a modified nonionic water-soluble cellulose ether specifically designed as a water-retention and viscosity-enhancing additive for cementitious mortars. Containing methyl, ethyl, and hydroxyethyl substituents, SildeyCel provides a unique balance between workability and strength. It is a highly significant water-retention and thickening agent in mortar formulations.

Construction grade cellulose ether is divided into Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose(HPMC) and Methylhydroxyethylcellulose (MHEC) according to different substituent groups. The substitute groups of HEMC are hydroxyethyl and methoxy, while the substitute groups of HPMC are hydroxypropyl and methoxy. Compared with HPMC, HEMC has more hydrophilic groups, which means it has a relatively higher gel temperature, better water retention in hot environments, and better thermal stability. HPMC has better water retention and workability in wall putty, tile adhesive, and other products.

  1. Water Retention

The excellent water retention of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose allows the cement to have a longer time to hydrate and improve the adhesion of the mortar to the substrate. It effectively prevents the mortar from losing water too quickly and causes drying and cracking, and makes the mortar have a longer construction time.

  1. Construction Improvement

The thickening effect of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose can control the mortar to achieve the best consistency, improve the cohesion of the mortar, achieve the anti-dripping effect, improve the operability, and greatly improve the construction efficiency. The consistency and slip resistance of the mortar is a very important requirement. For thick layer construction and tile adhesive, the mortar needs to have the proper consistency and slip resistance.

  1. Improve the Bond Strength of the Mortar

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose can improve the bonding strength of mortar, even in high temperature environment, it can ensure sufficient moisture of mortar, and make cement fully hydrated, thus ensuring better bonding performance of the mortar and ensuring mortar to various substrates. Cellulose ether significantly enhances the viscosity of mortar. Within polymer-modified mortar, the molecular structure of cellulose ether forms a solution with a certain viscosity when combined with water. This increases the mortar’s consistency, making it easier to apply and trowel after mixing.     Dissolution Methods

    When using HPMC, the most critical step is proper dissolution. To ensure optimal performance, here are common dissolution methods:

    1. Cold Water Dissolution Method: Slowly add HPMC to cold water while stirring to facilitate gradual dissolution. This method is suitable for the cosmetics and food industries, enabling rapid formation of a uniform solution.

    2. Hot Water Dissolution Method: For faster dissolution, heat water to 80-90°C (176-192°F), then slowly add HPMC. Stir until completely dissolved and allow to cool before use. Continuous stirring is required during cooling. Use low-speed stirring to avoid excessive shear that could damage HPMC’s molecular structure.
